Priority and Particle Physics: Ontic Structural Realism as a Fundamentality Thesis
نویسنده
چکیده
Talk of whether there exists a fundamental basis to the world pervades contemporary metaphysics. Increasingly prominent in the metaphysics literature are arguments as to whether the world resolves itself into a set of fundamental objects or whether, on the contrary, each object is composed of more fundamental objects ad infinitum.1 But there is a school of thought that takes it that, whatever its outcome, this whole debate gets off on the wrong foot, since this school denies that fundamentality ought to be construed in terms of objects at all. According to its proponents, even if there should exist a set of ‘fundamental objects’ – in the sense of a set of entities privileged with respect to other members of the category of objects, such as the fundamental particles or fields described in our best physics – it is not the case that such objects would qualify as truly fundamental. Rather, in their view, the most basic metaphysical level of the world is constituted solely by the structures that our best physics theories describe.2

The Measurement Problem Is Your Problem Too
Ontic structural realists draw support for their view from fundamental theories in modern physics. Quantum mechanics is uncontroversially regarded as being amongst those theories. In this paper, I defend the idea that quantum mechanics cannot play this role of a fundamental theory without assuming that a solution for the measurement problem is available. I go on to illustrate that, in the light...
متن کاملLooking forward, not back: Supporting structuralism in the present.
The view that the fundamental kind properties are intrinsic properties enjoys reflexive endorsement by most metaphysicians of science. But ontic structural realists deny that there are any fundamental intrinsic properties at all. Given that structuralists distrust intuition as a guide to truth, and given that we currently lack a fundamental physical theory that we could consult instead to order...
متن کاملOn the Fundamentality of Symmetries
That symmetry is fundamental to modern physics is a view frequently expressed by physicists. In his popular expositions Steven Weinberg, for example, has aimed above all to communicate his conviction that ‘symmetries are fundamental, and possibly all that one needs to learn about the physical world beyond quantum mechanics itself’.1 His fellow particle physicist Abdus Salam has argued similarly...
متن کاملThe modal nature of structures in ontic structural realism
Ontic structural realism is the view that structures are what is real in the first place in the domain of fundamental physics. The structures are usually conceived as including a primitive modality. However, it has not been spelled out as yet what exactly that modality amounts to. This paper proposes to fill this lacuna by arguing that the fundamental physical structures possess a causal essenc...
متن کاملCategory-theoretic structure and radical ontic structural realism
Radical ontic structural realism (ROSR) claims that structure exists independently of objects that may instantiate it. Critics of ROSR contend that this claim is conceptually incoherent, insofar as, (i) it entails there can be relations without relata, and (ii) there is a conceptual dependence between relations and relata. In this essay I suggest that (ii) is motivated by a set-theoretic formul...
